Description

Aluminium Heatsink for TO-220 Components

This compact aluminium heatsink helps dissipate heat from TO-220 transistors, MOSFETs, voltage regulators and other power components. Its approximately 19 × 14 × 10 mm dimensions suit power supplies, amplifiers, motor drivers and circuits with limited space.

Features and specifications

  • Lightweight aluminium construction
  • Compatible with many TO-220 packages
  • Passive cooling through natural convection
  • No power supply or fan required
  • Simple mounting for electronics projects

The exact thermal resistance is not specified. Performance depends on dissipated power, airflow, ambient temperature and mounting quality.

How it works

Heat passes from the component into the heatsink. The aluminium spreads it over a larger area to transfer it to the surrounding air. Good thermal contact lowers component temperature and improves reliability.

Estimating dissipated power

For a linear regulator, P = (Vin − Vout) × I. Reducing 12 V to 5 V at 0.5 A dissipates (12 − 5) × 0.5 = 3.5 W. Check the resulting temperature against the component datasheet. This small heatsink is not suitable for every power level or ambient condition.

Mounting

  1. Disconnect circuit power completely.
  2. Clean the component and heatsink contact surfaces.
  3. Apply a very thin layer of thermal compound.
  4. Place the component against the heatsink and secure it with suitable screws, nuts or clips.
  5. Add an insulating thermal pad if the metal tab must be electrically isolated.
  6. Check for short circuits with a multimeter.
  7. Power the circuit and monitor its temperature.

Excessive thermal compound can reduce heat-transfer efficiency.

Electrical isolation

On many TO-220 components, the metal tab is connected to a pin, such as a MOSFET drain, transistor collector, or a regulator input, output or ground. If the heatsink could contact an enclosure, another component or earth, use an appropriate silicone or mica thermal insulator, an insulating screw washer and suitable thermal compound. Always consult the component datasheet.

Applications

  • Linear voltage regulators and power supplies
  • Audio amplifiers and power transistors
  • MOSFETs, motor drivers and LED controllers
  • Converters, chargers and circuit-board repairs
  • Educational projects and prototypes
