Description

SN04-N Inductive Proximity Sensor

The SN04-N detects nearby metal objects without contact. It is an NPN, normally open, three-wire sensor for position or presence detection in automation and robotics applications.

Specifications stated by the source

  • Supply: source specifications conflict. The feature list states 5–30 V DC, while the wiring instructions state 10–30 V DC. Verify the rating printed on the actual sensor before powering it.
  • Nominal sensing distance: 4 mm. Actual range depends on target material, size, alignment and installation.
  • Output: NPN, normally open (NO).
  • Response frequency: 500 Hz.
  • Current consumption: 5 mA.
  • Cable length: 1 m; status LED; ABS housing; stated protection rating IP67.
  • Dimensions: 35 × 18 × 18 mm; stated operating temperature: −25 to 75 °C.

Wiring and output

  • Brown: positive sensor supply.
  • Blue: 0 V supply return.
  • Black: NPN switching output.

An NPN output is a sinking switch and does not provide a logic-high voltage by itself. Use a suitable pull-up or interface circuit. Since this sensor may be powered above typical microcontroller input limits, never connect the black wire directly to a 3.3 V or 5 V input without confirming the circuit keeps the input voltage safe. The source also gives inconsistent switching-level descriptions; verify the output behavior with the sensor documentation and test setup.

Inductive sensors detect metal; they do not detect every material. Test the intended target and mounting distance before relying on it in a machine or safety function.
