Description

MQ-8 Hydrogen Gas Sensor Module

This module is listed with an MQ-8 semiconductor sensor for hydrogen (H₂) response experiments. Semiconductor gas sensors change their electrical response with exposure, but the reading depends on sensor condition, calibration, temperature, humidity, airflow and interfering gases.

🔧 Sensor reference specifications

  • Sensor type: semiconductor (SnO₂)
  • Target gas: hydrogen (H₂)
  • Manufacturer-stated MQ-8 test range: 100–1,000 ppm H₂ under specified conditions
  • Heater supply: 5.0 V nominal
  • Heater consumption: up to approximately 950 mW in the cited specification
  • Sensitivity adjustment and indicator LED: may be present depending on the breakout board

The range above is a sensor test specification, not a guarantee that this breakout supplies calibrated ppm readings. The source listing says the module can “prevent” exposure to several other vapours and gases. A sensor cannot prevent exposure; and MQ-8 is primarily specified for hydrogen, so do not treat it as a dependable detector for alcohol, cooking vapour, LPG or carbon monoxide.

⚙️ Warm-up and calibration

The sensing element is heated. The manufacturer specifies preheating over 48 hours for its standard test conditions. Allow the specific sensor and circuit to stabilize and calibrate them before interpreting trends or thresholds. A raw analog or comparator output is not, by itself, a calibrated hydrogen concentration.

🔌 Typical breakout connections

Follow the printed pin labels on the actual board; common versions expose VCC, GND, analog output (AO) and comparator-based digital output (DO). Use the specified heater supply; do not power the heater from a GPIO pin. Check AO/DO output levels before connecting them to a 3.3 V-only microcontroller input, and use suitable level shifting or protection where necessary.

💡 Suitable prototype uses

  • Supervised demonstrations of hydrogen-sensor response
  • Microcontroller analog-input and threshold-comparator experiments
  • Non-critical laboratory trend monitoring

Hydrogen safety notice: hydrogen is highly flammable and can be difficult to detect without appropriate equipment. This hobby module is not a certified hydrogen leak detector, industrial monitor or life-safety device. Never rely on it to protect people or property, detect a leak or replace approved equipment. Use certified instruments and follow applicable safety procedures. Do not release hydrogen intentionally for testing.
